Laser Pigmentation Removal

Laser Pigmentation Removal

Pigmentation usually occurs in the skin on the most exposed areas of the body; such as our hands, face, shoulders, and neck and is most often caused by either, ageing, sun damage, hormonal changes such as pregnancy, or reactions to skin preparations. Pigmentation appears from brown to greyish-brown to pinkish brown in colour which is due to cells called melanocytes producing an excess of melanin in the skin. This excess of melanin is what we see as pigmentation in our skin. Three factors influence how many treatments you will need, these are your skin type, the type of pigmentation and the depth of the pigmentation in your skin.By removing these areas of pigmentation you complexion will appear fresh, clear and healthy.

Age spots, Sun Spots, Liver Spots & Freckles

Our Revlite laser is the latest innovation for removal of unwanted pigmentation. As one of the most advanced Q switched lasers on the market, it excels at removing pigmentation with minimal fuss or downtime.Brown spots, commonly called age spots or liver spots occur mainly on the face and hands and can be unattractive producing a blotchy looking appearance. They are caused by sun damage and are effectively treated with laser light. The introduction of the Revlite laser has enabled these spots to be removed without harming the surrounding skin. Some lasers destroy skin non-selectively however the Revlite laser light is directly targeted to the pigment in the brown spots leaving the skin with normal pigment and texture.

What is Melasma?

Melasma is the brown splotchiness on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, or jaw line that is triggered by hormones and light. Hormones (such as during pregnancy, or with the contraceptive pill) stimulate the growth of cells that make brown pigment (melanocytes). And natural light stimulates the production of even more brown pigment (melanin) which is why sun protection and sun screen are very important factors in the successful treatment of melasma. The Revlite laser can help lighten and soften these areas of abnormal pigmentation.

Is It Painful?

At Dermamed Skin clinic, we use super cooled (-20 degrees) air which takes most of the pain away from the laser treatment and it is generally very well tolerated. If you wish, numbing cream may be applied 30 minutes beforehand or local anaesthetic may be injected by the doctor. After the treatment the area will appear darker and will gradually flake off, normally this process takes about 5 – 7 days. There are no special precautions required after the treatment and make-up can be applied the next day.
